What Tint is Legal in Michigan?
The law governing window tinting is MCL 257.709. Tinting is permitted on the rear side windows, the rear window (if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides), and the top 4 inches of the front side windows. However, there is a medical exception, allowing darker tint with a doctor’s note. Michigan does not specify a limit for window tint darkness but restricts any tint with a solar reflectivity higher than 35%.
What Medical Conditions Qualify for a Window Tint Exemption in Michigan?
Conditions that often lead to light sensitivity, such as lupus, photosensitivity disorders, or other severe skin or eye conditions, may allow for a darker tint than what is typically legal. When filling out your form either select one of the existing conditions or put in what you think is a qualifying diagnosis. We will review your submission before setting up your doctors appointment to make sure you can qualify.
Michigan Tint Laws and Exemptions
Michigan tint laws are enforced to ensure drivers can see adequately and maintain a safe driving environment. However, exemptions to these laws exist for individuals who suffer from medical conditions that make sunlight dangerous or uncomfortable. The window tint law exemption in Michigan allows individuals with a medical exception to have darker window tints that would otherwise be illegal. By consulting with a licensed medical professional, either in person or online, you can receive an exemption for window tint if you meet the qualifications under Michigan tint laws.
